ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) parliamentary party in its meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Monday resolved to act as ‘Great Wall of China’ for the supremacy of constitution and respect of people’s mandate.
The meeting adopted a resolution lauding the leadership of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and reiterated to accomplish the policies and uplift projects envisaged by him.
The meeting felt that the challenges faced by the country could be countered through strengthening democracy, rule of law and respect for the public mandate.
It was noted that in the past Pakistan had paid huge price by neglecting these principles. The meeting believed that PML-N would get massive success in next polls on the basis of its performance and public service.
The PML-N was the largest party of the country which had steered Pakistan out of the economic and financial crises, crippling power outages and terrorism by putting it on the path of economic prosperity, peace and stability, the resolution said. “Foundation for a brighter Pakistan was laid down with massive investment in the power sector of the country. Through China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a bright future for the country was ensured. The progress and work on CPEC projects would continue with full vigour and would be completed on time,” the resolution said.
The meeting noted that few frustrated political figures after suffering repeated setbacks in the democratic arena were out to create confrontation among the national institutions to achieve their negative political objectives. The party resolved to resist such moves and not let them succeed. Separately in Lahore, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif chaired a meeting at Model Town to review the current political situation in the country. The meeting reportedly discussed future strategy of Sharif family on corruption references filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on the orders of the Supreme Court.
Another meeting was held between Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif on Monday at the former’s Model Town residence in Lahore. During the meeting, Nawaz took Shehbaz into confidence regarding his appointment as PML-N president, said party insiders. An announcement to this effect is expected on September7.
Last week, Senator Sardar Yaqoob Khan Nasir was appointed as the party’s interim president following an order from the Election Commission of Pakistan to PML-N to elect a new leader by Aug 25.
Shahbaz had previously also been touted as the next prime minister, while incumbent PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was to serve as a stopgap arrangement till the Punjab CM could be elected to the National Assembly. The plan changed, however, after some party leaders opposed the ‘unnecessary’ disturbance in the existing political setting.
